So what if Knokke-Heist isn’t a place, but an event?A shifting cluster of nomadic galleries, permanent anchor points, and events synchronized not so much by the seasons, but by the calendar of an affluent tribe landing in tune with the agenda of their peers.
With twelve kilometers of beach from Heist to Het Zwin, six Michelin stars, pilots from Hermès to Louis Vuitton, an annual Chanel seasonal boutique and Europe’s most important vintage car rally, Knokke-Heist doesn’t need to construct a set. The architecture of luxury is already baked into the landscape.
THIS IS WHERE YOU'LL FIND OUR THELIST SUMMER PRINT EDITION IN KNOKKE-HEIST
The collectible design platform Objects With Narratives taking over the historic Villa Westthinder with a summer installation is the perfect snapshot of that balancing act between modernism not as rupture, but as sediment. A chat with founders Nik and Robbe Vandewyngaerde and Oskar Eryatmaz about their fascination with collaborations and nomadic concepts in our print edition.

Don’t get us wrong, visiting brick-and-mortar galleries is key. And Knokke-Heist has plenty of them. Never stop staring at, smelling, occasionally touching the art (not the gallerist). Beyond the physical limitation that most of us can’t exactly do a daily lap around Rome, Hong Kong, or New York to catch all those delicious exhibitions, Hannibal Books is part of a new wave of art book publishers making the ‘catalogue’ a parallel experience. The contemporary art book is far more than the ‘exit through the gift shop’ purchase it once was; it has evolved into its own genre. The carefully curated selection of their books, one-offs and prints in one dedicated pop-up space in Knokke-Heist illustrates that ambition.
Not only rethinking the role of the art catalogue, but also the art of retail. The publisher cuts through the conventions of the traditional bookstore by directing its own brand space, showing a sharp selection of editions, titles, and limited prints inside the brand new OUI concept store in Knokke. Did anyone say existing footfall meets pop-in?Ceci n’est pas un pop-up.

OUI - Zeedijk-Het Zoute 739, Knokke-Heist
OUI perfectly balances the beautiful chaos of a tightly curated mix of fashion and interior gems in the mid-price segment by anchoring them in theatrical, premium locations.
With the introduction of their newest concept store with sea views right behind the Place M’as-tu-vu, founder Pascale Wagelmans illustrates her ‘dopamine retail’ strategy: affordable treats that make you feel better. While high-end galleries and luxury houses set the stage, it is the high-frequency anchors that drive the year-round momentum. This ritual runs from the artisan bakers where both tourists and residents invest in premium bread and pastries, to Oui’s new flagship. This flow of strolling shoppers keeps the streets alive when things quiet down in the haute couture temples.

“The Wardrobe is much more than just a store to me,” says 26-year-old Amandine, founder of a new concept that combines a coffee bar, in-house collections, and spaces for rotating collabs. “I mainly want to create a community, a place where people love to walk in, even when they don’t need anything. One day you drop by for an iced matcha, a coffee, and a chat, the next day you walk out with a new favorite outfit.”

Her fascination with deadstock fabrics grew out of her Fashion Business studies, which led to the creation of her own brand, Revive. “We hunt for leftover fabrics from past productions and design completely new, limited collections around them. For me, it’s crucial to show that sustainability and upcycling can go perfectly hand in hand with a fashionable and cool aesthetic.”

Whether it’s the legendary Tataki salad from Les Délices d’Emilie, natural wine and take-away in a brutalistic ware house at Pinot, or lunch with a view at Roka, haute take-away was on the menu here long before the hype.

In Knokke-Heist, the arrival of BOB’S ARTISANAL BAKERY proves that a modern bakery/coffee bar can transform a neighborhood. While Knokke-Heist is primarily known as a classic, sophisticated Vuitton-clad coastal town, ‘le nouveau Heist’ claims its spot as the rock ’n roll sibling of the Knokke neighborhoods. Bold, aspiring architecture and the scent of freshly toasted sourdough set the tone.
“Something is happening here,” Yannick notes. “I really believe there’s potential to make this a seaside Brooklyn.”After building a reputation as Antwerp's ‘sourdough bros,’ Ann and Yannick moved to Knokke-Heist last summer. “Back to the roots. And a choice for balance and quality of life, yes.” Besides the—by now ‘world-famous in Knokke-Heist’—sourdough toast and a drool-worthy selection of cinnamon rolls, a small but fine range of delicacies stands out: Zoete Polder jams (try the cherry with honey), crunchy chili and almond olive oil by Umma, and Maxmax’ premium spicy olive oil with Jolokia pepper.

"The relationship with a place and a building starts with architectural quality, but the programming is just as vital,” he notes. “That is a crucial part of our job. How the plinth—the ground-floor layer of the building—is filled determines the image of this square and Graaf d'Ursellaan for decades to come. "Developer Bjorn Christiaens's full interview in the print edition.

When the Antwerp-based VCRB gallery sets up shop for four months in a stunning location on Zeedijk-Zoute in Knokke, putting its collection in direct dialogue with vintage design from Modern Antiques, it captures two major shifts reshaping the art world. Galleries are leaning hard into collaborations that elevate both portfolios, while swapping traditional setups for nomadic concepts that strike right during peak season. After years of operating from two permanent locations, VCRB now anchors itself in the Museum District in Antwerp while shifting its presence in Knokke to nomadic pop-ups. Founders Minneke Van Campen, husband Erwin Buys, and daughter Louise constantly push the boundaries where design and art blur.Full story in the print edition.
