Shocker: the future of luxury retail isn’t robots or digital try-ons — it’s an elevated return to the human element. Think genuine smiles and real expertise.A conversation with Mallée Hoet, second generation of the Hoet dynasty — a family-run Antwerp boutique known for its cult, artisanal eyewear labels and elevated personal service.

Mallée — born in Ghent, raised in Mallorca, and now a full fledged Antwerp fixture — inherited a love for eyewear and art from the cradle.

“The connection to art is rooted in personal passion and a strong family legacy. It stretches back to my great-grandfather, an early collector, and runs directly through my grandfather’s brother — the late, great ‘art pope,’ Jan Hoet.”

This lifelong immersion in art and aesthetics naturally extends beyond eyewear — shaping her perspective on style, culture, and the hidden gems of Antwerp.

"We’re not big fans of selling eyewear online, because we strongly believe that you need to try on a pair of glasses before buying them,” says Mallée Hoet, second generation of the Hoet dynasty. “Our approach is deeply personal — we genuinely look to find the perfect frame, without any commercial push. The right fit, a great look... it’s all about discovering which pair makes you feel your absolute best. Glasses are functional first, of course, but to us they’re just as much a fashion statement — whether subtle or bold. A pair of glasses should reflect your personality."

Tucked away on a discreet street linking the brand-new Zuidpark and Kloosterstraat, the observant flâneur might just discover a blueprint for the future of luxury retail — guided by warm, personal consultation and an exclusive edit of cult and artisanal eyewear labels at Huis Hoet.In an era where the rules of luxury are being rewritten, one thing has become unmistakably clear: true luxury thrives on human expertise and an environment that elevates the act of choosing a frame into an experience. It’s no surprise that the physical store is the most crucial link in the brand narrative, but Huis Hoet in Antwerp elevates that experience to another level. The Riemstraat boutique serves as a blueprint for the sector’s future: a brick-and-mortar space that balances a salon and an art gallery, offering customer service at the level of your own personal shopper, and featuring a range of exclusive cult brands—from Jacques Marie Mage, renowned for celebrity collaborations with everyone from Ayrton Senna to Patti Smith, to the high-fashion, goth/punk-rock aesthetic of Chrome Hearts.“A personal favorite,” smiles Mallée. “These aren’t just glasses, but practically jewels. Every frame is finished with sterling silver or plated gold. They truly succeed in bridging the gap between pure rock ’n roll and a classic touch.”

With exclusive collabs ranging from Patti Smith to Ayrton Senna (also check the latest John Lennon and Yoko Ono inspired designs), Jacques Marie Mage is the must-have brand du saison.

From an on-the-go cappuccino from Dellafaille, an Aperol Spritz at Patine, the wasabi purée at Umami, or the avocado toast and matcha latte at Oaas, Mallée has a soft spot for places where the setting is equally as important as the cuisine. For a healthy dose of art, Leonhard’s Gallery, De Zwarte Panter and Tim Van Laere Gallery are personal favourites.
